Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend / Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata
Review By: John Fragglepuss Evans
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama, Slice of Life, School, Dating Sim Creation
First Aired: Winter 2015, 12 episodes
Summary: Tomoyo Aki is a seemingly normal high school otaku working part time to support his manga addiction. One day he crosses paths with Megumi Kato due to an unforeseen bicycle/hat incident. All of the sudden his seemingly normal high school life is not so normal. He ends up working with two fellow high school students that are famous in the literary world, although for completely different styles of work. They are helping bring Tomoyo’s dream project, a dating sim, to life.
Saekano is primarily a slice of life anime set in high school with a twist. The twist being that two of the students are popular in the literary world, while the third, Tomoyo, is attempting to have the other two help him create his dream project. The anime uses its characters to explain the aspects of a popular dating sim as the episodes pass. In this manner the viewer is able to learn about what goes into the creation of such a game, and is able to learn as well as be entertained by the show.
You might enjoy this if: You are interested in learning about the creation of a dating sim courtesy of a slice of life anime.
You might not like it if: You want a more up tempo anime. For example, there is almost an entire episode that features the protagonist simply trying to come up with an idea for his game. The pace picks up toward the end of the season, but if you are too impatient to wait that long, this might not be the anime for you.
Note to the Viewer: In addition to light novels, manga, and an anime, there is a Saekano video game that released for the PS Vita in 2015!
