Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Slice of Life, Ghosts, World Destruction
First Aired: Spring 2015, 12 episodes
Summary: Yuuta Iridatsu, a seemingly normal high school student, is easily excitable. Like many anime protagonists, when he sees a girl’s panties, he gets an uncontrollable nose bleed. However, unlike other protagonists, he is seeing panties on a regular basis and he gets so excited he faints. After some unusual circumstances and a meeting with a ghost cat, Yuuta’s soul gets separated from his body. Using his special powers that literally “Level Up”, Yuuta watches the daily lives of the inhabitants of a house and sometimes plays tricks on them. It is also worth noting that the ghost cat informed Yuuta that if he gets too excited from seeing girl’s panties, the Earth will be destroyed… Pay attention in the first episode, it is all explained.
Punchline starts off strong in the fan service and nose bleed category. The first episode even has a double nose bleed, one from each nostril, shooting into the sky. This is done in a comical fashion, with the anime being quite aware of what it is doing. However, after the first episode, the story starts to develop and back stories begin to reveal themselves for the four girls that live in the house Yuuta is inhabiting as a ghost. The characters are adorable, each with their own unique personality that allows the viewer to tell them apart almost immediately. While Punchline initially grabs your attention with fan service and nose bleeds, it keeps your interest with the characters and the fun story. There is a unique manner in which the season progresses. I will not spoil it for you, just know that I appreciated the manner in which the story was told throughout the season, and I think you will as well.
You might enjoy this if: You are in the mood for something quite strange, yet heartfelt.
You might not like it if: Panties used as comedy are not your thing.
Note to the Viewer: You will either love Punchline or hate it. There will be no in-between.
