Watamote: No Matter How I Look At It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Unpopular! / Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!
Review By: John Fragglepuss Evans
Genre: Comedy, School, Slice of Life, Social Awkwardness
First Aired: Summer 2013, 12 episodes.
Summary: Kuroki Tomoko is a popular high school girl who has 50 years of dating experience and 100 boys… in the online world. In actuality, she is a 15-year-old who has just started high school and is too nervous to talk to anyone. She really wants to be popular and fit in with everybody else, but the harder she tries, the more awkward she becomes.
Watamote follows Tomoko through her awkward high school life. She has countless internal struggles where she imagines how a conversation will go if she simply approaches someone and talks to them. In her head, she is lovely and charming, and everybody loves her. Unfortunately for her, in real life it never goes as well as it did in her head. She usually ends up saying something completely inappropriate and awkward or not saying anything at all. She then becomes increasingly frustrated with her lack of social ability and tries to figure out new ways to fit in. This includes anything from a new wardrobe to a total makeover. As you can imagine, her drastic changes never seem to go over well either. The series is enjoyable to watch and leaves you rooting for the underdog, even if the underdog says some of the most unusual things you will ever hear in your life.
You might enjoy this if: You are a fan of the sweet and sour. Watamote will leave you feeling great at times and sad at other times.
You might not like it if: You cannot handle social awkwardness. There are some truly cringe worthy moments that occur in Tomoko’s daily life.
Note to the Viewer: I guarantee Watamote will make you uncomfortable at times…In a good way of course.
