Maria the Virgin Witch / Junketsu no Maria
Review By: John Fragglepuss Evans
Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Historical, Magic, Witches
First aired: Winter 2015, 12 episodes.
Summary: Maria is a powerful witch living during the Hundred Years’ War in France. She loathes war, so she interferes in battles using her magical powers to conjure monsters and the like. Her interference catches the attention of the heavens, and the Archangel Michael issues a proclamation that when Maria loses her virginity, she will lose her magical powers. Ezekiel is supposed to watch Maria and make sure the witch does not use magic in front of people, but Maria continues to use magic anyways.
Junketsu no Maria is full of uniquely drawn characters, from the witches to the succubus and incubus. There could be a wide variety of cosplay derived from this anime. I enjoyed the vibrant colors of the animation in the series. However, after the well-drawn animation, the rest of Maria leaves a lot to be desired. I imagined the story would be entertaining and well-written, being that it is set in medieval times with witches, magic, battles, and so on. After watching several episodes I found myself simply not caring about the story or what happened to the characters.
You might enjoy this if: You have always wanted to watch an anime account of the Hundred Years’ War that involves witches and magic.
You might not like it if: You want to watch an interesting anime.
Note to the Viewer: For it being an anime about a virgin witch, there is not a lot of sexual chatter, it is mainly just implied.
