Genre: Comedy, School, Sports, Slice of Life, Swimming
First aired: Summer 2013, 12 episodes + a few specials + second season starting in Summer 2014!
Summary: Our main character, Haruka Nanase, is a high school boy who has always loved the water. While in elementary school, he participated in a swimming tournament along with his fellow swimming club members, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka. After being victorious in the tournament, each of the boys went their separate ways. Fast forward to high school, Rin randomly shows up and challenges Haruka to a swim, showing him how much he has improved over the years. Haruka gathers Makoto and Nagisa to create the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club in order to defeat Rin.
Free! is a sports anime that anybody can enjoy. It has a great story line that includes comedy and a dash of drama. The characters are both lovable and unlovable, developing as the story progresses. I have never been much into the sport of swimming, but Free! had me interested in it from the beginning.
You might enjoy this if: You are looking for a coming of age, slice of life, sports anime. Free! has all the necessary elements of these genres and has put them together well.
You might not like it if: You are looking for romantic interests as an important part of the anime. Free! truly revolves around the friendship of these high school boys.
Note to the Viewer: Watch for subtle jokes throughout the season, such as the mysterious background of their teacher and how all the boys have traditionally girl names.
