Who is Wasatch Roller Derby? Info on the Surprise #9 League in the West

By: John “Fragglepuss” Evans

Wasatch Roller Derby was started in 2008 by Honey Delunatic and Medusa Damage. The league skates in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their all-star team is known as the Midnight Terror. It has appeared to many that Wasatch has come out of nowhere in the past year to make an unprecedented climb into the top 10 in the West. Those close to Wasatch know that this climb has been a long time in the making, with a mixture of their existing team and transfers, utilizing hard work and dedication to improve their skill and become competitive on the national level.

Wasatch first made waves in September 2011 during the 2nd annual Spudtown Knockdown. Spudtown is a double-elimination tournament in Boise, Idaho hosted by the Treasure Valley Roller Girls. In this tournament, Wasatch lost in their second bout and had to play in two 30-minute bouts and 4 full-length bouts on the second day of the tournament, playing multiple bouts in a row. Wasatch won all of these bouts, coming back in a miraculous fashion to take 1st place in the Spudtown Knocktown.

The success of Wasatch has continued in 2012 with an impressive showing at the Big O, defeating Humboldt and Dockyard, and losing by 5 points to #8 in the West at the time Jet City. Since the Big O, Wasatch has beat Pikes Peak, Angel City, Treasure Valley, Silicon Valley, and Santa Cruz. While they have not yet played the top six leagues in the West, they have done everything they can to show that they deserve a shot at doing so.

Wasatch moved up from #15 in Q1 to #9 in Q2, jumping six ranks to make the Western playoffs. Of the four WFTDA Regions, only the West had a league climb from #11 or lower into the top 10. In other words, the top 10 in the East, North Central, and South Central stayed the same in Q1 and Q2.

Many have questioned whether or not Wasatch deserves a top 10 rank this Quarter. They deserve it because in the last Quarter they beat leagues that are now ranked #8, #14, #15, #16, and #21 in the West. Their bouts for last Quarter do not include a bout against one of the top six leagues in the West, but they beat everyone else they played and they deserve a shot to go to the playoffs and show if they are just a fluke or prove that they are the real deal.

Great article Puss! @Biz, how do they not all just blur into one giant 5 hour bout? It had to have felt that way. It was awesome to watch.
